Wear & Care Guide

How to safely insert, remove, and store your colored contact lenses — for FDA-cleared EOS lenses and all other brands.

Quick Answer Wash your hands, soak new lenses in multi-purpose solution for at least 8 hours before first wear, insert with clean fingertips while looking up, and always store in fresh solution — never tap water or saliva.

Colored contact lenses are FDA-regulated medical devices, not fashion accessories. Whether you're wearing our FDA 510(k) cleared EOS lenses or any other brand, proper handling protects your eyes and makes your lenses last. This guide covers everything from first insertion to daily storage, based on standard optometric care guidelines.

Before You Start

  • Soak brand-new lenses in multi-purpose solution for at least 8 hours before first wear
  • Wash and dry your hands with a lint-free towel before touching your lenses
  • Trim long nails before handling lenses to avoid tearing them
ℹ️ Why 8 hours matters Skipping the initial soak is not optional to skip — it significantly increases the risk of irritation and infection on first wear.

How to Insert Circle Lenses

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly, then dry with a lint-free towel
  2. Place the lens on your fingertip and check it isn't inside-out — a lens is inside-out if the edges flare outward instead of curving smoothly like a bowl How to check if a colored contact lens is inside out

Correct bowl shape (left) vs. inside-out, flared edge (right)

  3. Using your other hand, gently pull up your upper eyelid and down your lower eyelid to reduce blinking
  4. Look upward and place the lens onto the white of your eye (sclera) Correct technique for inserting circle lenses safely
  5. Look downward to help the lens settle into position
  6. Slowly release your eyelids
  7. Blink gently a few times — you're done
⚠️ If it feels uncomfortable Remove the lens, rinse it, and check again for inside-out placement or debris before reinserting. Never force a lens that doesn't feel right.

Friendly reminders

  • Rinse your lens case again after inserting your lenses
  • If your eyes become itchy, blurry, or red, stop wearing the lens and see an optometrist
  • If a lens slides under your eyelid, look in the opposite direction and gently nudge it back toward your pupil with a clean fingertip

How to Remove Circle Lenses

How to safely remove colored contact lenses
  1. Wash your hands thoroughly — fragrance-free soap is best
  2. Look in a mirror and make sure the lens is centered on your eye
  3. Pull your upper and lower eyelid apart gently to reduce blinking
  4. Pinch the lens gently between two fingers and lift it off
  5. Place it directly into fresh solution in your lens case

How to Store Your Lenses

  1. Fill your lens case with 3–4 drops of multi-purpose solution
  2. Place the lens in your palm and add 2–3 more drops
  3. Rub the lens gently for about 20 seconds to remove buildup — don't scrub hard, lenses tear easily
  4. Place the lens into the case, fully submerged in solution
  5. Each time you take lenses out to wear them, discard the old solution and refill with fresh solution before storing again
✅ Storage tips Keep your lens case at room temperature away from direct sunlight · Make sure the caps close tightly when not in use · Replace your lens case every 3 months, even if it looks fine.

Daily Wear Do's and Don'ts

Do
  • Clean your lenses every day, even for extended wear
  • Remove protein buildup weekly with a protein remover tablet
  • Use saline or lubricating eye drops if your eyes feel dry
Don't
  • Wear a damaged or torn lens
  • Apply makeup before inserting your lenses
  • Use saline to disinfect — it only rinses
  • Rinse or store lenses in tap water or saliva
  • Mix different solution brands, or share lenses

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I soak my lenses in saline instead?

No. Saline only rinses — it does not disinfect. Always soak and store lenses in a multi-purpose contact lens solution (e.g. Clear Conscience, Alcon Opti-Free, Bausch & Lomb ReNu). Never mix different solution brands together.

Why is my vision blurry when I first wear circle lenses?

This is common for first-time wearers because the lens slightly reduces the amount of light entering your eye. Mild tearing, redness, light sensitivity, and increased blinking are normal in the first few wears and typically fade as your eyes adjust. If blur or discomfort persists beyond a few days, stop wearing the lens and consult an optometrist.

How often should I replace my lens case?

Every 3 months, to limit bacterial buildup — even if the case looks clean.

Do I need to change my solution daily, even if I'm not wearing my lenses every day?

Yes. Solution should be replaced daily regardless of wear frequency, since bacteria can grow in stored solution even without use.

How do I remove protein buildup from my lenses?

Clean with multi-purpose solution after every wear, and use a weekly protein remover tablet (such as Unizyme or Ultrazyme) for deeper cleaning.

Are colored contact lenses safe to wear every day?

Yes, when you follow proper hygiene and replacement schedules. Our EOS lenses are FDA 510(k) cleared, CE certified, and ISO 13485 compliant — but even certified lenses require the same daily care as any prescription contact lens. See our certified EOS lenses →
